Pet Meds are expensive, but they don't have to be. If you are following this link from one of my articles then you already know the dangers of buying medications online. Pets have died because they have been given the wrong dose of a medication, mislabeled pills, or an out of date prescription.
The FDA has warned that:
"Some foreign Internet pharmacies advertise that veterinary prescription drugs are available to U.S. citizens without a prescription."
and that...
"There is a risk of the drugs not being FDA-approved."
However did you know that your vet is charging 30% + markup? Before you go chew out your local Veterinarians some vets use a portion of their profits for good causes. However that is still your money and if you so choose you don't HAVE give it away like that.
Lets get down to Brass Tacks:
The Biggest Pill Mill Indicator
Legitimate pharmacies need a prescription from a licensed veterinarian in order to fill a prescription. Allot of disreputable pharmacies will have you fill out a form so that they "veterinarian" (a person you have never met) can make a diagnosis.
The FDA states that:
"A veterinarian should physically examine an animal prior to making a diagnosis to determine the appropriate therapy..."
How To Know A Reputable Pharmacy
The FDA recommends that you do business with a Vet-Vipps Accredited Pharmacy. Vet-VIPPS is the Veterinarian arm of the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy. Only Pharmacies who meet strict state and federal regualtions can carry the Vet-VIPPS Seal on their page.It should be easy to contact a live human being and they should have a veterinarian on staff.
All of these should be prominently displayed on the first web page of the site.
What are they doing for the pet community or are they all about the money?
National Pet Pharmacy is part of PetMD which is vast resource when it comes to getting information on your dog, cat, bird, horse etc.
